Most of our recent builds have leaned toward a classic aesthetic paired with modern tech like wireless shifting and carbon components. This build, however, is what I’d call Hyper-Mechanical. We still love the clean look that wireless setups bring, but this is another way to approach it.

As mentioned in the blog, one of the unique features of the Surly Midnight Special is its down-tube shifter bosses, which surprisingly became the focal point of this build. (https://davebikes.cc/blogs/dave-bikes-hq/an-attempt-to-build-a-future-classic)

We wanted a true build-and-forget concept, something that can be ridden anytime, anywhere. No charging batteries, no dried-up sealant, and no worrying about the wrong tire choice. This thing is simply pump-and-go.

The Surly Midnight Special is always an exciting canvas. We equipped this bike with down-tube shifters, meaning no cables running from the drop bars, resulting in an incredibly clean look. We paired it with TRP RRL levers to give it that rugged Mad Max feel. Don’t let the classic vibe fool you either, this thing is highly capable with its SRAM Eagle 12-speed drivetrain and massive 10-51T gearing at the rear.

We also decided to keep the stock steel fork to preserve the timeless look and ride quality. For the rollers, we went with 27.5 Maxxis Ikon MTB tires running on tubes instead of tubeless. It may sound old school, but it perfectly fits the build-and-forget philosophy of this bike. No sealant to dry up, no mess, just reliable pump-and-go simplicity. They may not be the fastest on pavement, but they pedal easier than expected and can swallow almost anything in their path.
